White & Red Patches in Mouth
The fearsome looking red patch above is from a 65 yr old lady from our practice who feared that it is cancer.
Let me tell you that all red and white lesions are not cancers but can be potentially precancerous i.e may possess the ability to change into cancer .
Hence it is absolutely necessary to have all ulcers or patches in the mouth inspected by an oral pathologist or dentist at the earliest and of course insist for a biopsy if the patch persists for more than 14 days with or without treatment.
Thankfully the lesion here on biopsy revealed Lichen Planus a common auto immune skin disorder and which coupled with her medical history of Diabetes and Hypertension established a diagnosis of Grinspan's syndrome!! NOT A MALIGNANCY.
So never hesistate to consult a dentist or an oral pathologist/surgeon for a diagnosis that can save you years of speculation and anxiety that may lead to psychological disorders!!
